General Snorkelling...

It is a wonderful, exciting and indeed memorable experience to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. On a reef holiday you'll swap stories with others, you will encounter mostly smooth seas, you will see beautiful reefs and gorgeous marine life, and bask in the sun between activities on the deck of a boat or sun drenched beach.

Most marine activity takes place in the top 4 metres of the ocean and as Queensland boasts some of the world's clearest water, visibility is always at a premium with some days offering more than 30 metres.

If you haven't snorkelled before, most marine tour operators will offer instruction before you enter the water and will have staff on hand to assist you. The only requirements are the ability to swim and fairly good fitness as snorkelling is a strenuous activity. You don't need complicated equipment, just a well fitting mask, a snorkel and fins - which will be supplied on your tour or available for hire onboard. You can also hire prescription lenses if you usually wear glasses.

On some islands and parts of the Queensland coast, you can snorkel right off the beach and see spectacular marine and coral life. Remember to take care with the sun though; snorkelling can occupy you for hours.

Guided Snorkelling Expeditions ...

To learn more about the marine life around you, consider taking a guided snorkelling tour offered by many cruise or diving operators. Marine biologists will guide you pointing out fish, corals and areas of interest along the way. It's a safe way to expand your boundaries and discover more about the wonders of the Queensland coast.

Generally a trained marine interpreter gives a thoroughly informative coral and marine life brief before conducting a 30-40 minute interactive expedition over shallow reef formations discussing throughout the tour what is observed by the passengers.
